We SEO?s have been waiting for this moment for about a year and a half. Google has officially confirmed that more searches occur on mobile devices than on computers in 10 countries, which include the US and Japan. Google also groups tablets like the iPad in with computers, so smartphone-generated searches are truly outclassing tablets, laptop computers, and desktop computers combined.
What does this mean for my website?
In Google?s mobile search algorithm announcement they stated that any website that has implemented Responsive Web Design (RWD) will receive bonus points in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). This information coupled with the data that mobile devices are winning out in the tech wars, proves that a responsive website is the way to go to get noticed by organic search engine users. If you already have RWD implemented on your website, you?re all set. If you don?t, now is the time to update.
Is this just hype for a new kind of design?
Nope. RWD is here to stay, especially with this announcement. RWD has become a standard practice and AWG offers this feature when quoting for any site design or redesign. Basically, RWD enables content to fit in a browser of any width and height by allowing for elements of a webpage to be moved. You can tell if a site has RWD built into it by scaling the size of your internet browser. Here?s an example of our site being resized:
A site that does not have RWD built into it will not resize like this. It will end up looking like this when it?s resized:
As you can see, you’ll only be able to view the upper left corner of the site without scrolling.
How do I know if I need RWD?
Good question. If you have a tracking program installed on your site, check your mobile traffic percentage. If it?s 25% or higher then RWD should be implemented on your site so conversions aren’t lost.
